I have that exact smoke detector but in a battery powered version. If I am not mistaken it uses a photoelectric detection system as opposed to an ionization chambre.

  2. catsandpowerlines says:

that was so quiet i can’t here it

  3. scooterbugs25 says:

Ebay sells a lot of them

  4. coffeeandsugar20 says:

    Where can I find one?

  5. sfs2040 says:

    Not very loud at all.

  6. brunoofthesheikra says:

if it runs by household wire, it will not help in a situation where the power’s out. Thank God such items are powered by 9v’s or AA’s.

  7. mjb1124 says:

It sounds like an electric razor, appropriately enough.

  8. scooterbugs25 says:

I have one of those too! They sold them in a Gulf catalog back in the 70’s.

  9. NewAgeServer says:

that’s the biggest smoke alarm i’ve ever seen!

  10. mallmaven says:

    Not loud at all

A neighbour of mine used to have one of those detectors in their house but it was the battery powered one. To me they look more like doorbell chimes than smoke detectors. I think these were a rare item as well and werent on the market very long. Electromechanical buzzers always made me jump (and still do til this day). But piezo buzzers never did.

Awesome video. That smoke detector sure looks really old. What a deep sounding electro-mech sounder, too. I have 3 BRK 1789ACi 120VAC smokes in my house, and they also have lectro-mech sounders also. I jump 10+ feet in the air when they go off! Smokes Alarms with electro-mech sounders are much more interesting that the one equipped with piezos. Do you have any other smoke alarms with electro-mechanical sounders that you could possibly make videos for?

  13. NLind says:

    Late ’70s is my guess

  14. mastrsushi101 says:

    how old is the smoke?

  15. bi0boy says:

oh yeah that sounds for an awfully long time after you release the test button!

  16. bi0boy says:

Wow nice vid! I’ve never seen smoke alarms that plugged into an outlet. I’ve heard ones like that however. My old house had Probe 202s, and my current house used to have Firex FX1020s. Both were VERY loud. They scared me when i was little. Electromechanical buzzers sound WAY more urgent than piezos!

  17. tyeman200 says:

That is ONE wierd smoke detector!
